ABSTRACT

Athlete injuries disrupt individual careers and impact team performance and morale. While physical rehabilitation has been extensively studied, less attention has been paid to how an athlete’s return affects team dynamics and cohesion. This review examines the factors and consequences of athletes who have been injured and their subsequent return to play. The results indicated the need for holistic rehabilitation incorporating physical, psychological, and social intervention and support. Modern rehabilitation practices such as biomechanical assessments, individualized strength training, and psychological support using cognitive-behavioral therapy and mental imagery are crucial in preparing athletes physically and mentally for return. Case studies demonstrated how well-prepared RTP protocols and support systems enhanced individual and team performance. However, poor communication, cultural stigma surrounding mental health, and in-team role conflicts need to be addressed for successful reintegration. RTP protocols need to be developed through structured planning, clear role definitions, and open communication among athletes, coaches, and teammates. Further athlete-centered research is necessary to conduct longitudinal, cultural, and comparative observations. Supporting injured athletes is essential for their recovery for fostering resilient, high-performing teams.
